While it does not have the prestige of a number of the big Sydney or Melbourne staying features, it offers $200,000 in prizemoney and often attracts quality stayers who are being targeted at bigger events later in the spring.

The biggest Sydney trainers generally have entrants in the Newcastle Cup, with the likes of Gai Waterhouse and Chris Waller testing their stayers ahead of Group 1 events such as the Metropolitan in Sydney or the Caulfield and Melbourne Cups.
