A notable performer over major black type events through the 2014 Autumn Carnival, trainer John O’Shea has confirmed Tupac Amaru in the final field for the 2014 Newcastle Cup.

Securing one win and five minor places from just 13 competitive starts so far, Tupac Amaru secured several notable results over the 2013 edition of the Spring Racing Carnival, arguably highlighted by a close run for second in the Listed Geelong Classic (2200m) and luckless run for 5th in the Group 1 Victoria Derby (2500m).

Returning to racing for a credible third in the ATC Membership On Sale 3.y.o (1400m) on February 28th, the Street Cry gelding appeared out of depth when eleventh in the Group 1 Randwick Guineas (1600m) on March 15th and while only slightly more convincing when ninth in the Group 1 Rosehill Guineas (2000m) two weeks later, almost responded in the best way possible when finishing a close second to Criterion in the Group 1 Australian Derby (2400m) on April 12th.

Returning to the paddock after finishing sixth in the Group 1 Sydney Cup (3200m), Tupac Amaru is yet to figure in contention over two starts this time in but is offered an excellent chance of returning to the winner’s circle in the Newcastle Cup.

Also confirmed in the final field for the 2014 Newcastle Cup is talented British import Secessio.

A largely consistent performer over eight starts through his current racing preparation, Secessio returned to racing for seventh in a minor over 1600m on April 25th before quickly building to the task via minor places in both the Listed Lord Mayors Cup (2000M) and Listed WJ McKell Quality (2400m).

Having since won the Listed Winter Cup (2400m), finished second in the Listed Grafton Cup (2400m) and third in the Listed Wyong Cup (2100m) most notably, the Konigstiger gelding has been charged with overcoming the wide and awkward barrier 14, but will be boosted by renowned jockey Hugh Bowman in the 2014 Newcastle Cup.

Trainer Chris Waller is set to be offered three good chances of success in the 2014 Newcastle Cup, confirming Brigantin and Multilateral will join Secessio on Thursday.

Beginning his racing career abroad in France before arriving in Waller’s care partway through 2012, Brigantin also performed well over six race starts through autumn, but is yet to figure in two black type starts this time in.

Claiming a total of six wins and 12 minor places from 36 competitive starts, the Cozzene entire will leave from the ideal barrier 2 with veteran jockey Glyn Schofield confirmed to take the ride in the Newcastle Cup.

Laying a great account for himself when charging home to win the Wyong Cup in what was his maiden black type appearance last time out on September 5th; Multilateral was allocated the central barrier 7 for the 2014 Newcastle Cup and will be partnered by jockey Jim Cassidy for the seventh time competitively.

Contesting an impressive record of seven wins and six minor places from 22 competitive starts, the Mizzen Mast gelding has been included in first acceptances for the 2014 Caulfield Cup, and will go a long way towards justifying an appearance with victory in the Group 4 Newcastle Cup.
