2014 Newcastle Cup Betting Update

September 17th, 2014

A talented field of 15 stayers has been confirmed for Thursday’s featured Group 3 Newcastle Cup (2300m), offering punters exceptional value from a betting standpoint and several key opportunities to place a winning wager.

Having charged home to win the Listed Wyong Cup (2100m) with relative ease last time out, Multilateral has opened as and maintained status as outright favourite for success in Newcastle Cup betting markets, currently available at generous odds of $4.40 for success.

Beginning his racing career abroad in Britain before arriving in the care of trainer Chris Waller at the conclusion of 2012, Multilateral has secured an impressive total of seven wins and six minor places from 22 competitive starts and is a great chance of continuing a strong run of form in 2014 from the ideal barrier 7 in the Newcastle Cup.

Finishing seventh in a minor over 1400m first-up on June 21st, the Mizzen Mast gelding ran on for fifth in the Spring Carnival On Sale 3.y.o+ (1500m) before returning to the winner’s circle when beating a classy field to the line in the Bob Ingham 3.y.o+ (1900m) on July 9th.

Placing third in the De Bortoli Wines 3.y.o+ (1800m) and a luckless fifth when blocked for a run in the final straight of the Dooleys 3.y.o+ (1800m) on August 16th in his only other starts prior to the Wyong Cup, Multilateral has been confirmed to be partnered by veteran jockey Jim Cassidy and is more than worth consideration for a Newcastle Cup bet.

While yet to receive much more than a sprinkling of bets for success in Newcastle Cup markets, Peter Moody-trained import Wish Come True has maintained position on the second line of betting, and is currently available at odds of $5.50 for success with Ladbrokes.com.au.

Claiming four wins and as many minor places form just 13 competitive starts, Wish Come True steadily built to the task over four starts in his maiden Australian preparation through autumn, peaking with a strong win in the Group 3 Tatt’s Cup (2200m) on June 21st.

Returning to racing for fourth in the Listed Premier’s Cup (1800m) on August 30th, Moody is not particularly thrilled with Wish Come True’s allocation of the wide and awkward barrier 15, but is thrilled with the condition of the four-year-old ahead of the 2014 Newcastle Cup.

Currently offered at $2.10 to run a place, punters may find value in included Wish Come True as a selection in a Newcastle Cup trifecta or quinella bet.

Interestingly figuring as the only other runner currently offered at odds of less-than $10 for success in the 2014 Newcastle Cup, Canny Ballad will also have to overcome a wide draw in barrier 11, but is more than worth consideration for a bet in being charged with carrying just 55kgs on Thursday.

Performing well in five starts over early autumn which peaked with an impressive win in the Listed Albury Cup (2000m), the Dream Ballad gelding has steadily built to the task over four starts this time in, finishing second in the Wyong Cup last time out.
